Thursday 22^nd March 7pm until 9pm

Festival Prelude: Screening of Bloomsday Cabaret at 7pm featuring James Joyce and how his love for music influenced his written work. A Canadian Irish Production produced by Canadian Film Maker Rosemary House and introduced by Marie Stamp.

Friday 23^rd March 7pm until 9pm

Poetry to Music workshop in preparation for recital and performance during the Festival Saturday event, 'My Muse' is the workshop theme. Poems from previous years submitted to SiarSceal Literary Competition can also be brought to the workshop. Poet Ann Joyce and musicians Sean Hanily & Ríl óg are the facilitators, early booking necessary prior to workshop date.

Ann Joyce poet from Sligo: Ann is a poet and short story writer. Her publications and repertoire include the following poetry collections; Watching for Signs (Dedalus, 2005), Chapbook: Threads from Maeve's Mantle, CD the Queen Maeve Suite (prose/poem with traditional musician John Carty,) she is also published in varied anthologies. Ann is this year's adjudicator for the Hanily Greally Literary Awards and will Read; followed by an interactive workshop with questions and answers from the floor.

Our second Guest Speaker is a publisher from The Authors Friend who will invite also group participation during the interactive session. Musicians Sean Hanily and Sea Shanty Music from Sligo and the day will also feature 'You' with your choral Recital from the workshop you attended the previous evening.

Festival entry fee for all events is just 20 euro which includes up to three submissions for the Hanna Greally Literary Competition in prose, poetry or short story. NEWSLETTER UPDATE FOR SIARSCÉAL 2012

We have taken on board your suggestions and feedback with thanks from the 2011 SiarSceal Festival event and we are delighted to announce from your literary collective of five years submissions, that we are publishing the first SiarScéal Anthology 2012, and including a selected entry of yours.

The book will be launched and available on Saturday March 24^th a limited publication of 200 books only, orders taken as requested after the launch. The anthology will be edited to suit the format when deemed necessary.

There will be a 10euro charge for the weekend events which will include your admission to the Classical Recital and Friday's workshop. The Hanna Greally Literary Awards (see the enclosed for details, your work includes poetry, prose or short story and the fee remains 10 euro for up to for three entries.)

The Sunday Royal Celtic site tour with An Cruachan Aí Cenre which you will also visit has a concession fee for the SiarScéal Festival group for €7.50 per person with an two hour duration visit and tour commencing at 11.00am at the centre.

All the SiarScéal Festival weekend events and your three submissions to the Hanna Greally Literary Awards will cost you only 20 euro, so please get writing. SiarSceal Festival 2012 Poetry /Short Story/Prose Competition with the following theme:
Roscommon My Muse or your own County/City/My Muse. (An inspirational place or person which aids your creativity)

Inviting all writers, individuals and groups……….Competition Guidelines

All entries submitted must be the authors' own unpublished work.

Entries are limited to three poems/stories/prose per person;
Poems will be no longer than 60 lines. Short stories/ prose no longer than 500 words.
Entries submitted must be typed and titled.
Entrants name, address, contact number, details and poem/story/prose
Title must be written on a separate page.
Closing date for entries will be Friday January 27^th 2012
Entries will not be returned and the judges' decision is final (external panel)
Entry into the competition implies acceptance of the competition guidelines.
Festival organisers and guests are not eligible for entry.

· Overall Winner and local winner will receive Crystal Trophies.

· Followed by Highly Commended Awards.

· The winners will be presented with the awards by the Mayor of Roscommon and you will be invited to Read during the Festival Launch.

SHANNONSIDE FM AWARDED THEIR OVERALL ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT AWARD TO SIARSCEAL FESTIVAL FOR 2010 PRODUCTION WITH THE IRISH WHEELCHAIR ASSOCIATION

SiarSceal Festival has a themed poetry to photography exhibition which will open in Roscommon Library on the 19th March 2011, in conjunction with SiarSceal Literary Event with participating local writers and Guest Speakers which will be held in the Fortfield Suite in the Abbey Hotel. Admission is FREE for this all day festival event which will run from 10am to 6pm. Launch Reception (sandwiches tea/coffee) complicments of our sponsor Roscommon County Council Library Services. Major Attractions: Author, Playwright, Poet Dermot Bolger, Questions and answers from the floor. Dermot is also the adjudicator of The Hanna Greally Poetry/Memoir Awards. Interactive workshop with poet Mary Turley-McGrath followed by novelist, poet Kieran Furey. The Festival features YOU, and your contribution to the exhibition and the Open Mike.

SiarSceal Festival 2011 celebrates their 5^th anniversary in the Fortfield Suite of the Abbey Hotel, Saturday March 19^th with an all day literary event from 10.am to 6pm with Patrons Address and the Mayor of Roscommon, music by Sean Hanily. SiarSceal was recently awarded the Shannonside FM Arts & Entertainment Award for the overall Shannonside region, for their local writers/groups participation especially their work with the Irish Wheelchair Association.

Guest Readers are: Dermot Bolger, author, playwright, and poet whose latest acclaimed play 'Parting Glass' a social and political story of two generations rings a chord in today's recessionary times. Dermot is this year's adjudicator for the Hanna Greally poetry/memoir award winning ceremony and presentation.

Poet Mary Turley-McGrath will read from her collection 'New Grass under Snow' Her poetry has won numerous awards both in Ireland and England. She will host an interactive workshop followed by a Recital with local poet & author Kieran Furey.

The festival will launch the themed exhibition 'Roscommon in Reflection' poetry & memoirs from local writers with accompanying photographer Tom Barlow. Barlow's photography captures Roscommon's natural environment, farming, and wildlife with sensitivity and creativity in all seasons, running for the month's duration in Roscommon Library.

Open Mike Invitation for writers and groups featuring 'You' will also highlight the afternoons events. Refreshments will be served and the event is free, all sponsored by Roscommon County Council Library Services. An exciting SiarSceal Festival event in association with the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) will take place in the IWA, Cuisle Holiday Centre Roscommon 8^th October from 7.30pm until late.

'Capturing Now' is an exclusive Art Exhibition by artist Anne O'Connell which will be launched and featured throughout the weekend. Anne is a member of the (IWA) whose 'cubic surrealism' imagery has been likened to Picasso, portrayed through her use of vivid colour, strokes and subject detail, Anne exhibited last March with Acquired Brain Injury Ireland in Kerry Library, Castleisland.

Celebrations include the launch of 'Home Place in Translation' a limited edition of poetry by IWA Resource & Outreach Centre (ROC) members, illustrated by local art and photography. This exclusive empathises with the nostalgic imagery created throughout the writers living memory of yester years, when carrying turf sods to school to light the fire, rambling from house to house, family farming and living on your own produce during the war years was resourceful, the norm.

Guest Speakers for the evenings performance will be Roscommon County Librarian Richie Farrell and Jean Coleman IWA Manager, artist Joan Attenbury and Nuala Ni Chonchuir author and poet. Extracts from the book will be performed by the Abbey MusicPlayers, a choral recital group accompanied by Sean Hanily.

SiarSceal Festival March 20^th Roscommon Library All Day Event

Shannon pleasure cruise with Don Baker Easter Sunday.

An exciting all day event takes place in Roscommon County Library Saturday March 20^th 2010, for writers and poets in the region. Commencing with the major and patrons address, followed by The Hanna Greally Poetry Awards Memoir Ceremony presented by Adjudicators Novelist Michael Mullen and Bilingual Poet Adjudicator Nuala Ni Chonchuir, featuring Readings from our Guest writes, and a Choral Medley with the Sliabh Ban Singers from Boyle. Award winning bilingual poet and novelist Nuala Ni Chonchuir will be reading from a selection of her work, including her latest short story collection 'Nude', an explorative, self-questioning agenda, full of witty voices rendering adventures both savage and absurd.

Refreshments and Exhibition Appraisal will follow. The themed painting words exhibition by local artist & writers will be launched on the competition themes which are: 1 'Home Place in Translation' 2. 'Threading my existence through family gone before' and thirdly 'Roscommon My Home,' closing date for competition entries has been extended to March 9^th. Novelist, Historian, Playwright, and Children's author Michael Mullen will give a Creative Writing Master Class in Roscommon Library at 2pm. From four 'till six there is an Open Mike. SiarSceal Festival 2010 features in concert the following:

Singers/Songwriters Eleanor Shanley & Frankie Lane - Abbey Hotel Roscommon ( date to be confirmed )
Don Baker in Concert Moon River Cruisier on the Shannon River Easter Sunday.
Hanna Greally Poetry Awards & Memoir Ceremony presented by Novelist Michael Mullen, Readings & Bilingual Poet Author Nuala Ni Chonchuir.
Launch also of the SiarSceal themed poetry/art exhibition. Master Writers Workshop with Novelist Michael Mullen.

We are also expecting a guest recital from Actor Mick Lally known also as 'Miley from Glenroe'
The Sliabh Ban Singers Medley Boyle will feature and a choral recital exclusive with harpist Laura O'Reilly, local writers and participating school children.

The Objectives of SiarScéal

Integrate communities through the written word, keeping the story ("scéal") active
Include historical and social account of stories relevant to each community through art, photography, choral recitals and teamed painting words exhibitions and national poetry memoir competition (The Hanna Greally Prestigious Award).
Host an Annual Festival at a prestigious venue
The annual Siar Scéal Festival is a Historical and Literary, Bilingual Festival inspired by the culture and heritage of Roscommon's River Basins.
Participants are invited to read at the 'open mike', connected by their common river theme
Schools and all organisations are invited to participate in the festival, promoting equality and inclusiveness
